The ceramic brackets are made from high-quality porcelain or ceramic material that does not easily stain. Unlike plastic, ceramic is non-porous, meaning food and drink pigments don’t soak into the bracket itself. With good oral hygiene, ceramic brackets usually stay clear and blend in well with your teeth throughout treatment.
In most cases, it isn’t the brackets that stain — it’s the elastic bands that tie the wire in place. These small elastic ties are often clear or white, which makes them more prone to discolouring between appointments.
Common staining culprits include:
- Coffee and tea
- Red wine
- Curry and strongly spiced foods
- Tomato-based sauces
- Cola and dark fizzy drinks
- Smoking or vaping
Over time, these can cause elastic bands to turn yellow or dull, making braces more noticeable. The good news is that elastic bands are changed at every orthodontic adjustment, usually every 6–8 weeks. This means any staining is temporary and easily resolved at your next appointment.
Poor oral hygiene can lead to plaque build-up around brackets, which may cause:
- Yellowing of the surrounding tooth surface
- White spot lesions once braces are removed

This isn’t staining of the braces themselves, but it can affect how your smile looks during and after treatment. Regular brushing and cleaning around brackets is essential.
To keep ceramic braces looking their best:
- Brush after every meal with fluoride toothpaste
- Use interdental brushes to clean around brackets and wires
- Rinse with water after drinking coffee, tea, or fizzy drinks
- Limit heavily pigmented foods and drinks where possible
- Attend all scheduled orthodontic appointments
Ceramic braces remain an excellent option for patients who want a less noticeable fixed brace. While elastic bands can stain slightly between visits, the brackets themselves stay clear, and staining is usually easy to manage with good care and regular adjustments.
